At
approximately 4:08 PM on Tuesday, March 1, 2005 the City of McCook Fire
Department responded to a reported structure fire at 208 East 7th
Street. Upon
arrival of the fire department heavy smoke and fire was coming from the
house at that location.
Firefighters
had the fire under control within 15 minutes; however, the structure was
determined to be a total loss. The
value of the structure was estimated to be $20,000.
The
fire department investigation revealed that an individual was using a
makeshift wood-burning stove inside of the structure, and due to
improper installation and use of the stove, the fire spread from the
stove to furnishings and carpet surrounding the stove.
The
structure is owned by Pete Graff and was vacant at the time of the fire.
Twenty-four firefighters, along with two engines, two
ambulances, one rescue unit, and two quick response vehicles spent
approximately two hours at the scene extinguishing hot spots and
investigating the fire.
“We
were very fortunate to have the rapid response that we had to this fire.
We responded to an emergency ambulance call that came in at 4:07
PM with our on-duty fire department staff.
We received the initial call for the structure fire at 4:08 PM. Our off-duty full-time crew was on the scene of the structure
fire at 4:10 PM. Our quick
initial response along with our excellent volunteer personnel response
to both incidents allowed us to handle both situations efficiently.”
states Fire Chief Marc Harpham.
