The McCook City and Volunteer Fire Department responded to
a reported structure fire at 4:40 a.m. on October 4, 2003. First at the scene identified a
large amount of smoke coming from the back of the house. Damages to
the house at 505 West 2nd were estimated at $15,000 to the structure
and $15,000 to the contents.
McCook Fire Chief Marc Harpham said the fire was apparently caused by a
short in electrical heating tape in a crawl space under a bathroom on the
main floor. Joe Lopez, his wife, and six children escaped the house
without injury. One of their children awoke to use the restroom and smelled smoke and woke the rest of the family.
Harpham said that while the fire was not large it was difficult to
extinguish because of the small area in which it was contained. The
fire was under control by 5:00 a.m. however, firefights remained on the
scene for approximately two hours to monitor the fire and extinguish hot
spots.
Eleven McCook firefighters responded and one engine, one truck, one
rescue vehicle, and one ambulance responded to the scene.
