The
McCook Fire Department received a report of a structure fire at the
Landmark Apartments, located at 424 Norris Avenue.
The report was received at 12:56 AM on Monday, July 24, 2006.
Firefighters
arrived at the scene a short time later and were faced with heavy smoke
conditions on the second floor of the building.
A fire was located in an apartment on the second floor where the
sprinkler system had activated and did a good job of knocking down the
fire. Firefighters
completed the extinguishment of the fire.
The
residents of the apartment complex were alerted by the fire alarm system
and had evacuated the building prior to the arrival of the fire
department. Some occupants
were allowed to return to their apartments after the fire; however,
those whose apartments were damaged either relocated or were provided
with a place to stay by the American Red Cross.
Firefighters
did go room to room to assure all of the tenants were out.
Once the building was cleared, firefighters cleared the smoke
from the building.
The
fire caused considerable smoke and water damage to the apartment along
with smoke and water damage to other apartments within the complex.
Members
of the McCook Fire Department, McCook Police Department, and State Fire
Marshal’s office are still investigating the cause of the fire.
Damage
estimates are still being determined, however, initial estimates range
from $15,000 to $25,000.
“The
sprinkler system operated correctly and did exactly what it is designed
to do. This, along with an
excellent response from our volunteer firefighters went a long way in
minimizing the damage that could have resulted,” said Fire Chief Marc
Harpham.
