The
McCook Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire on July
27, at 1306 West 3rd in McCook.
The call was received at 12:38 PM and fire and EMS crews were on
the scene within minutes.
Workers
were repairing an air conditioning unit when fumes from a chemical being
used ignited in the basement of the residence.
A flash fire ensued and was self extinguished prior to the fire
department arrival. However,
the structure still contained dangerous levels of the flammable
chemical, requiring firefighters to cautiously ventilate the fumes.
Two victims were treated at the scene and transported to
Community Hospital.
The
investigation revealed that the fumes gathered in the basement of the
residence and the flame from the hot water heater ignited the fumes,
causing the flash fire. Fire
damage was limited to the area directly around the hot water heater with
smoke damage throughout the home.
“Another
good response from our volunteer personnel, along with the rapid
response of fire and EMS personnel and apparatus allowed us to mitigate
the incident before more potential damage or injuries occurred,” said
Fire Chief Marc Harpham. “With
the hot weather, it is important to rotate personnel in and out
frequently. We appreciate
the neighbors offering us shade, chairs, and cold drinks,” said Chief
Harpham.
Thirteen
firefighters responded along with one pumper, one ladder truck, two
ambulances, one rescue vehicle, and one command vehicle.
Damage
estimates to the structure and contents were approximately $1,000.00.
