At approximately 12:18 AM on March 26, 2004, the
McCook City and Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported
structure fire at 1410 Norris Avenue #4.
Upon arrival of the fire department, there was heavy smoke exiting
from a second story apartment.
It was reported that the resident arrived home and
opened her front door, to find her apartment filled with smoke.
She quickly called 911 to report a fire from a neighbor’s house.
Tina Jackson owns the apartment building and the resident of the
apartment is Bobbi Scott. There
was extensive smoke damage to the apartment, which was estimated at
approximately $5,000. The
resident’s contents were estimated at a loss of $8,000.
No injuries were reported.
Firefighters entered the structure to find heavy
smoke and a small fire in a bedroom caused by a chemical reaction.
The fire was extinguished shortly after their arrival.
The fire was contained to the bedroom with smoke damage throughout
the rest of the apartment. Investigators
stated that the fire started from spontaneous combustion from the mixture
of household products.
We had twenty firefighters respond to the fire, one
ambulance, one rescue vehicle, and two engines. We remained on the scene for approximately one and half hours
ventilating the structure and performing overhaul and salvage operations.
We would like to remind everyone to check their smoke
detectors monthly and replace the batteries twice a year.
Early warning in the event of a fire is the key to survival.
