PRESS RELEASE

STRUCTURE FIRE

The McCook City and Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the area of East 2nd and "A" Street at approximately 9:20 p.m. on September 5.  Upon arrival at the scene firefighters found a warehouse owned by Frenchman Valley Coop full of smoke

Firefighters entered the structure and located the fire and extinguished it.  The fire was declared under control in less than 20 minutes.  Heavy smoke and heat remained in the structure forcing firefighters to cut a ventilation hole in the concrete roof of the structure.

Firefighters remained on the scene for approximately two hours performing overhaul operations to make sure that the fire was fully extinguished and completing the investigation.

The cause of the fire was determined to be the mixing of materials being stored in the building which ignited some creosote posts.  The fire than spread to an interior wall and into the ceiling.

The initial damage estimates are $7,500 in structural damage.  There was no damage to any of the contents of the building.

Nineteen firefighters, three engines, one ambulance, and one Rescue Squad responded to the call.
