| At 4:23 AM on Wednesday, April 23, 2003, the McCook City
and Volunteer Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at
905 West 5th Street. The fire department was on the scene within two
minutes and reported flames and smoke on approach. There was one
person in the house at the time of the fire.
With the rapid response of the fire department and the quick attack and
extinguishment of the fire, fire damage was limited to the bedroom.
Firefighters than worked on ventilating the smoke out of the structure and
conducting the investigation on the cause of the fire.
The house is owned by Brandon Doyle, who was awakened by a window that
broke due to extreme built up heat. He saw flames in the bedroom
where he was sleeping and escaped without any injury and called 911.
The fire started when a candle left burning ignited curtains, which
fell onto a bed, igniting the bed sheets.
The bedroom sustained extensive fire damage. However, the fire
was contained to the bedroom with moderate smoke and heat damage
throughout the rest of the structure. The estimate damage loss to
the house contents is $10,000 with an estimate $5,000 damage to the
contents.
We had nineteen fire fighters respond along with two engines, one
rescue unit, one aerial truck, and one ambulance, which spent nearly two
hours on the scene extinguishing the blaze and performing overhaul
operations. |
