The McCook City and Volunteer Fire
Department responded to a reported structure fire Monday, June 2,
2003. The call came in from a passerby at approximately 11:05 AM,
who reported smoke coming from a house at 1306 East "B"
Street. Fire department members were on the scene in
minutes and reported smoke coming from the rear of the structure.
Fire fighters determined that no one was in the house after asking the
homeowner, who had just arrived at the residence. Firefighters
entered the structure and located a fire burning in the
basement. The fire was quickly extinguished. Upon further
investigation, it was determined that the fire had spread up a laundry
chute to the main floor and into the attic. Firefighters than
ventilated the attic area by cutting a hole in the roof. Due to
the possibility of a lengthy salvage and overhaul situation, the Red
Willow Western Rural Fire Department was called for mutual aid.
Several rural firefighters responded and remained on the scene until
they were no longer considered necessary. The home,
which is owned by Kevin and Brendy Manley, received extensive smoke and
heat damage throughout the structure. The
investigation determined that fumes from fuel soaked clothing ignited in
the basement and the fire spread up through a laundry chute to the main
floor and the attic. Initial damage estimates were $40,000 to the
structure and $25,000 to the contents. Thirteen
firefighters and six apparatus from the McCook City and Volunteer Fire
Department and twelve firefighters and three apparatus from the Red
Willow Western Rural Fire Department responded. The
McCook City and Volunteer Fire Department remained on the scene for
approximately 2 1/2 hours performing salvage, overhaul, and
investigation activities.
