NewsWater Conservation, Drought, and Emergency Contingency Plan Last summer, McCook City water and sewer utilities were extended to the site of the Work Camp facility, north of town on North Hwy. 83. This consisted of 2,750 linear feet of 12" water main, 2,118 linear feet of 8" sewer main, and 784 linear feet of 10" sewer main. The total cost of the water main extension was $91,873.00, and the sewer main extension was $78,881.20. If the new water source site eight miles north of town is established, the new 12" water main will be interconnected with the new transmission main coming from the north well field. This will create a loop of the water system in this area, and provide for better flow characteristics for any future additions to the water system in this general location. WaterThe municipal water system in McCook is supplied by eight wells, which have an average depth of 70 feet. The well system has a combined pumping capacity of 5,500 gallons per minute and a storage capacity of 6,000,000 gallons. The average daily demand is 2,380,000 gallons, and the historic peak daily demand is 9,572,000 gallons. The system has a maximum capacity of 13,920,000 gallons per day. The static pressure of the water varies from 55 to 65 pounds per square inch. Groundwater is available for industrial uses. A 100-foot well could produce 1,000 gallons of water per minute. The water table has not changed significantly in the past 25 years. The quality of water in McCook does not necessitate a water treatment plant. The color of the water is clear and the hardness, in parts per million, is 400. The average tap water temperature varies from 50E in winter to 58E in summer. |
